A $3.5 million-restoration project is underway in downtown Elmira, as the city recently began the much-needed repairs to the clock tower at city hall. It's getting restored after many years of being out of commission. Click HERE for complete WSKG article. EXPERIENCED & EFFECTIVE My interest in local government began when I successfully opposed a neighbor's proposal to rezone her house on my block in Russellville, Arkansas. That led to a greater commitment to local government, city planning, and later to being elected to the city council. In between, I was asked to join a group of citizens interested in applying for the Main Street America program, a downtown revitalization and historic preservation program initiated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I drew up the application and later served on the board. I also drafted a plan for re-configuring and landscaping the downtown that became the basis of the final design. As a result of grass roots efforts and the city’s participation in the Main Street program, Russellville’s downtown has been transformed into a warm, inviting, attractive and thriving center, a place people want and like to be. |
