Elections/Term Limits
The current electoral protocol is that council members are chosen all at the same time. This policy could easily lead to uniformity on the legislature and the abuse of democratic principles in government. I believe that staggering the elections will allow the voters to examine the council at more regular intervals and provide a better check against the concentration of power. It will also guard against a possibly complete turn-over of elected officials in one year. I would suggest dividing the districts into 2 groups that will come up for election in separate years.
Likewise, the lack of term limits allows many elected officials to consider political office a career. The result is that the notion of service to their constituencies often takes a back seat to their own self-interests. In my opinion, our democracy is best served by limiting elected officials to 2-3 terms in office.
As mayor, I will advocate for term limits for city officials. Our current mayor is not in favor of limits. As a matter of fact, he has declared that he is thinking of at least 4 terms. Is that healthy? is another career politician what we want or need?
